Today Theodore Wafer, the man who killed 19-year-old Renisha McBride in November 2013, received his sentence.

Renisha McBride's family filed a $10 million lawsuit against Ted Wafer for her wrongful death.

On August 7, Wafer was convicted of three charges in the Nov 2 death of 19-year-old McBride in Dearborn, MI: second-degree murder, manslaughter and a weapons charge.

When 19-year-old Renisha McBride was shot in the face after knocking on a White man's door in suburban Detroit, I tweeted that her death would probably not mean as much to Black people as the then recent shooting of 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell. I doubted aloud if her murder would mean as much as Trayvon Martin's, for whom we'd united to demand justice. I tweeted that Black male bodies mean more to us than Black female bodies.

After a two week trial and less than 24 hours of deliberations, a jury has found Theodore Wafer guilty of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and a felony firearm charge for his role in the murder of Renisha McBride.

In November 2013, 19-year-old Renisha McBride crashed her car and wandered onto Wafer's porch where her family contends she was looking for help. Through his locked screen door, Wafer shot McBride. An autopsy revealed the shot that killed McBridge was not at close range.

Via CBS: Theodore Wafer should have called police instead of becoming "judge, jury and executioner," a prosecutor said Wednesday in urging jurors to convict him of second-degree murder for the death of Renisha McBride.

I heard the verdict in my car, driving from my birth home, Washington, DC to my new home, Baltimore, MD. I was stunned, my mouth agape and my mind muddled.
