By now, many of us have heard the news of Daniel Holtzcalw's conviction for sex crimes committed against 13 African-American women during his employment as Oklahoma City police officer. The videos of his tears have been liked and shared around the Internet, as people rejoice over what we have come to understand as "justice well served." Amidst the suffering and mourning for Black lives lost and brutalized across the nation, we can finally celebrate having "won" one. At last, we can sit back and revel in our oppressor's suffering.

Last weekend The Soul Train awards aired on BET and Centric. The ceremony, named for the long-running weekly broadcast that showcased the best in R&B and Soul music, was an unapologetically Black and Proud event filled with our most talented and treasured entertainers.

Fifty-seven year old Joe Morrissey, a former Virginia Lawmaker, recently admitted to fathering the son of his 19 year old former assistant Myrna Pride. The relationship hit the fan when authorities realized he became sexually active with Myrna while she was still a minor.

We all knew Lifetime’s recent biopic of the late singer, Aaliyah, would be awful. The family did not authorize the film, nor did it allow Lifetime to use Aaliyah’s original recordings. There were also a number of casting missteps. So yes, the Wendy Williams produced “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B” was doomed from the start. When those on social media jumped in with both feet to rip apart the movie (as well as everyone associated with it), it was no surprise. However, what did surprise me was (a) the way the film depicted the “relationship” between 15-year-old Aaliyah and 27-year-old R. Kelly; and (b) the fact that the film didn’t receive more backlash for this irresponsible portrayal of their very inappropriate relationship.
